Visit All the Wonderful Animals at the Panaewa Zoo. When visiting Hilo in Hawaii, one of the places that you must make the time to see is the Panaewa Zoo. The 12-acre zoo located on the Big Island of Hawaii is the only truly tropical zoo in the United States. The zoo is the home of more than 80 different animal species, all of which are beautiful and interesting.

You will be able to see many of your favorite types of creatures at the zoo, as well as some animals that you probably never even knew existed.Bengal tiger, Buffaloes, dears, monkeys and many other animals are there at the Panaewa Zoo in Hawaii for you to spend your Hawaii vacations in a true way.

When birds in Hawaii are discussed, Nene is a must watch bird,it is a Hawaiian goose.The crowned crane and local Hawaiian parrots are a treat to watch.

When it comes to reptiles and amphibians, you will quite a variety of species of lizards, turtles, and frogs. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful monarch butterflies as well.

In addition to all of the different animals, you will also be able to see all of the wonderful plants in the botanical gardens. You are sure to want to check out the Clumping Bamboo, the orchids, and much more. The gardens are an idyllic setting, a true paradise that you won’t want to leave.

The petting zoo is open every Saturday from 1:30PM to 2:30PM. You can watch the tiger feeding everyday at 3:30PM. It is something that you don’t want to miss.

Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop as well and pick up something by which you can remember your trip to the zoo. You will find many different kinds of great souvenirs available. The gift shop is open daily from 9AM to 4PM.

The Panaewa Zoo is open from 9AM to 4PM daily, except on Christmas and New Year’s Day. You can’t best the price of admission – it is free! Everyone who comes to the area around Hilo should take the time to visit all of the wonderful animals at the Panaewa Zoo.

  2. What? There's a zoo in Hilo? I didn't know that and I was born and spent most of my life in Hawaii. Better go and check it out next time I'm in Hilo. To me, it's important to see and know as much as you can about your home state.
